Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What instruments are needed?
A: We encourage donations of instruments that can be used in band and orchestra programs, including stringed instruments, brass, woodwinds, percussion and guitars. With the exception of pianos and organs, CPR accepts all instruments in good condition.

Q: My instrument needs a tune up. Can I still donate it?
A: Yes. Almost all instruments need some work so they are in the best, playable condition when schools receive them. Colorado Public Radio partners with The Colorado Institute of Musical Instrument Technology (CIOMIT) to repair donated instruments at a reduced cost.

Q: Is my donation tax deductible?
A: Yes. When you drop off your instrument, you will fill out paperwork to confirm your donation. The instrument will be appraised and you'll receive a letter from Colorado Public Radio noting the value of your donation, which can be used for tax purposes. 

Q: Where will my instrument end up?
A: Most donated instruments go to Colorado schools that can support a successful music education program but are currently underfunded. Most are Title One schools with a majority of low-income students. Colorado Public Radio works with the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation to identify and match the needs of deserving music programs throughout the state.

Q: How can my school get donated instruments?
A: Teachers and administrators can submit an application for their school to receive instruments.
