Mozart’s enchanting masterpiece Die Zauberflöte (“The Magic Flute”) returns to the Met stage in its original German-language version, broadcast live on Colorado Public Radio's classical stations this Saturday at 11 am. Adam Fischer conducts a cast that features Julia Kleiter as Pamina and Albina Shagimuratova as Queen of the Night. Matthew Polenzani reprises his acclaimed Tamino, while Nathan Gunn returns to the role of the lovelorn Papageno. David Pittsinger is Sprecher and Hans-Peter König sings Sarastro.
Tony Award-winner Julie Taymor’s visually arresting production features sets designed by George Tsypin, lighting by Donald Holder, and a wild array of puppets designed by Taymor and Michael Curry. Choreography is by Mark Dendy.
The intermission segment will feature backstage interviews with the stars as well as a feature on Mozart and his Singspiel, a form of opera characterized by spoken dialogue together with ensembles, songs, ballads, and arias of which Die Zauberflöte is an example. This special report will include rare excerpts from Mozart’s letters.
