New CD of the Week | Alison Balsom: Italian Concertos

Following her popular recording of Haydn and Hummel trumpet concertos, Alison Balsom thrills again with this new release of Italian Concertos.  None of these Baroque works were written for her instrument, but Balsom's effortless execution would make you think otherwise.  Composed for violin or oboe by Vivaldi, Tartini, B. Marcello, Albinoni and Cimarosa, this collection is the perfect vehicle for the award-winning trumpeter's characteristic brilliance and grace.

The dazzling blonde Balsom is a star in her native England where she's won numerous prestigious awards since childhood and played the Last Night of the Proms summer of 2009 to rousing success.  Balsom studied at the Guildhall School of Music (where she now teaches), the Paris Conservatory, then with the renowned trumpeter, Håkan Hardenberger.

Joined by the Scottish Ensemble, Italian Concertos is Balsom's first release since the birth of her first child with British conductor, Edward Gardner.  The proud new parents of eight-month old Charlie met in Denver while debuting with the Colorado Symphony in January 2006.
