New CD of the Week | Sound the Bells! American premieres for brass

The San Francisco-based Bay Brass presents a showcase of American music both rousing and moving with Sound the Bells!,  recent works by John Williams, Michael Tilson Thomas, Morten Lauridsen and others.  The Bay Brass was founded in 1995 and is composed of brass players from the San Francisco Bay Area's leading performing organizations, including the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco Ballet and the San Francisco Opera Orchestra.

Included on Sound the Bells! is Lauridsen's international choral success, O Magnum Mysterium, equally as transcendent for brass.  Young up-and-coming composer Kevin Puts also makes a showing, his name known to listeners who remember the Colorado Symphony premiere two years ago of his Clarinet Concerto, written for prinicpal clarinetist, Bil Jackson.  It's also intriguing to hear what San Francisco Symphony conductor, Michael Tilson Thomas has written in some of his precious spare time, as Sound the Bells! also includes his Street Song.

To bring out the brilliant sound of the Bay Brass, record label Harmonia Mundi enlisted Oscar® and Emmy® award winning recording engineer, Sean Murphy, who has worked on hit films such as Saving Private Ryan, Titanic & The Green Hornet.
