KVOD Presents will offer a conversation and performance at the keyboard with the Russian pianist Olga Kern. Recorded at the 9-foot Steinway grand piano in KVOD's performance studio, the hour-long show airs Thursday, December 6, at 3 p.m., and Saturday, December 8, at 3p.m., following the Metropolitan Opera broadcast.
Olga Kern was five when she began studying music. At seventeen she won the first Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition. In 2001, she won the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the first woman to win a gold medal there since 1969. Kern travels the world and has a young son who is a pianist.
Kern joined host Dan Drayer in September, the week she appeared with Jeffrey Kahane and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra to play Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini." Featuring a special performance of Rachmaninoff's Polichinelle in F sharp minor, Op.3 No. 4, Kern talks about her music, her family, and why she has a close affinity to Rachmaninoff.
