The last regular ski train excursion to Winter Park ended in 2009. But Amtrak, in honor of the ski resort’s 75th birthday, and to get a feel for whether might restore the service permanently, will operate a special express train on March 14.

"We’re taking this one step at a time, so if indeed there’s a lot of demand for this and if it sells out or comes close to it or if people tell us ‘I wish I can go, but the 14th doesn’t work,’ we’ll have a conversation with the resort and see where we are going forward for the next season," Amtrak spokesman Mark Magliari says.

There's only 4oo tickets for seats aboard the modern long-distance passenger cars, which went on sale Wednesday morning at $75 a pop, and sales are brisk.

It leaves Denver's Union Station at 7 a.m., March 14, and arrives at the Winter Park base at 9 a.m. The return trip departs at 4:15 p.m. and arrives back in Denver at 6:15 p.m.
