Denver Post Reporter Dies After Being Struck By Car

The Denver Post is mourning the loss of a reporter who died after being hit by a vehicle while crossing a street.

The Post reports that Colleen O'Connor was struck Wednesday night in a crosswalk. She had a bicycle but it's unclear whether she was riding it or walking it at the time.

Police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash and who had the right of way.

O'Connor joined the Post in July 2004. She was a reporter for the Post's Now Team and previously worked as a food writer and city desk reporter.

Post editor Lee Ann Colacioppo told employees couldn't imagine a more thoughtful and kind colleague and says the newspaper is a "poorer place without her."

Her colleagues posted tributes on Twitter:

I'm going to miss you so much. I loved our talks about good writing. https://t.co/YeLyIyYtDP

I cannot imagine a kinder or more thoughtful colleague. This is devastating. https://t.co/TNVmm4XcPo

Colleen's joy for writing stories like this, how she trusted me & celebrated our work together I will never forget https://t.co/p9WjQCxG19

She wrote about refugees: https://t.co/v4aRiwL8wK

And the African-American community: https://t.co/v1PMUl5NNO

Colleen was also passionate about history. I learned so much about Colorado's past from her stories: https://t.co/YWy2Kpbm1l

One final story: In 2010, Colleen wrote about ghost bike memorials for fallen cyclists. Hope she receives one, too. https://t.co/5nefNu3z9p
