The Denver Rescue Mission's new day center for the homeless in downtown Denver served breakfast to around 750 people Tuesday morning.

Mission spokeswoman Alexxa Gagner says after the breakfast rush, close to 200 people have been at the center on Tuesday, waiting out the storm.

"We don’t want people to be outside in the extreme temperatures like this, so having a place for people to be inside and warm who wouldn’t have anywhere else to go is really important today," Gagner said.

More than 500 people spent last night at the Rescue Mission’s overnight shelter next door.
