Douglas County Students Protest High Teacher Turnover

About 100 students tired of teacher turnover in Douglas County walked out of their classes Wednesday. In addition, students in the district have gathered more than 1,600 signatures in a petition drive to get some answers about the high turnover rate.

The Douglas County school district confirms that 33 teachers have left Ponderosa High in Parker over the past three years. Some teachers say they are upset with district policies on teacher evaluations and the market-based pay scale.

Superintendent Liz Fagen will meet with student leaders Thursday. In the meantime, she points out that many teachers have chosen to stay:

"We’re maintaining over 90 percent of our effective and highly effective teachers so those are positive things," she said. "That doesn’t mean it’s a perfect system -- we’re always open to feedback and improvement."
