El Nino Winter May Benefit SW Colorado, Experts Says

Experts are predicting this El Nino season could mean higher-than-average snowfall in southwestern Colorado.

The Daily Sentinel reports Colorado's position between the Southwest and the northern Rockies makes it difficult to predict how El Nino will affect the state, with some seasons bringing little to no impact farther north.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration researcher Klaus Wolter recently said people looking for plenty of snow this winter will likely find it in southwest Colorado's San Juan Mountains.

Colorado River District spokesman Jim Pokrandt says El Nino usually brings above-average snowfall to southwest Colorado, but has irregular impacts farther north.

National Weather Service warning-coordination meteorologist Jim Pringle says an El Nino as forecast would improve water supplies in southwest Colorado, where conditions have been especially dry.
