An updated city code could make new buildings in Denver up to 25 percent more energy efficient, say city officials. The new code comes from the 2015 International Code Council codes for buildings.
Scott Prisco, the city’s building official, says some developers are worried about the cost of the updated building requirements, but he says many building owners support the change.
"They’re really embracing this," Prisco said. "It’s a message that’s moving across the United States to be more energy efficient, to be more sustainable."
The city is going beyond the international standard in at least one area. It will require garages for new homes have the capacity to charge an electric car. The updated code goes into effect in six months.
