More than $2 million has been raised to campaign for the renewal of Denver’s cultural sales tax, according to a report released this week.

The Scientific and Cultural Facilities District sales tax will use the funds to increase television and online advertising. According to Michele Ames, spokesperson for SCFD, the campaign has taken more of a grassroots approach.

“We win when neighbors talk to neighbors, we win when communities understand the value," Ames said. In August, nearly $40,000 went to towards yard signs and printed handouts, and voters can expect to hear from SCFD “very forcefully" in September.

The tax district dates back to 1989 and covers seven counties. This year’s ballot measure will allow people to vote whether to extend the sales tax. Last year, it generated more than $50 million for around 270 organizations, from museums to orchestras.
