Photo: Colorado Capitol dome 2It’s hard to overstate how much news has come out of state government this week.

Yesterday the governor signed civil unions into law at a big ceremony downtown.

The day before, he signed three controversial gun control measures, in a more private ceremony with lawmakers and victims families.

And throughout this week, there were big legislative hearings on the death penalty, school finance, oil and gas, and more.

And in the midst of all that, there was, of course, the murder of the state’s top prison official.

In our regular conversation about state politics, host Ryan Warner and CPR's Megan Verlee talk about why so many controversial issues are coming up at once, and the impact that's having on lawmakers.

They also look ahead to the budget, which lawmakers expect to take up next week, and what conflicts may arise from it.
