A University of Colorado professor accused of retaliating against a female graduate student who reported being sexually assaulted by a fellow student has resigned after a months-long battle for his termination.

The Daily Camera of Boulder reports that CU began proceedings to fire tenured philosophy professor David Barnett over the allegations. Instead Barnett agreed to a $290,000 settlement with the university. Barnett's resignation is effective May 31.

Barnett appealed the university's decision to fire him and testified in front of a faculty panel in December. The panel found that he had not retaliated against the woman but had engaged in conduct that was below the standards of the profession. The group recommended a one-year suspension.

CU's president was deciding if Barnett should be terminated when the settlement was reached.
