Denver’s New Police Monitor Takes the Helm

Listen Now

If someone has a complaint about the Denver police, Nick Mitchell wants to know. He’s the new independent monitor. Independent because while there are those within the police force who investigate misconduct, this position is on the outside, and reports to the Mayor. The job was created in 2004. Mitchell most recently worked as a commercial attorney, but spent years investigating police conduct for New York City. He told Ryan Warner that in this new role, he’s required to be involved in some cases; for example, when an officer shoots someone or there’s a death in police custody. Beyond that, Denver’s independent monitor has some discretion to decide what other cases he wants to investigate.
