Hip-Hop with Another Perspective

When you hear the name of the Denver hip-hop group, “Wheelchair Sports Camp," you might think it’s a cheap ploy...irreverent musicians trying to get attention with an outrageous name. But the group's MC, Kalyn Heffernan, says that's not the case.
“It was more about putting it out there and making it okay. It’s like ‘this person’s in a wheel chair, but she’s the first to joke about being in a wheel chair. So don’t feel obligated to be politically correct or anything," she says.

Wheelchair Sports Camp, which also includes DJ B*Money (Christopher Behm-Meyer) and siblings Abi and Issac McGaha Miller on sax/vocals and drums respectively, is starting to make a name for itself. The group was on the official lineup at this year’s South by Southwest festival in Austin and was written up in this month’s Spin magazine.
By the way, Kalyn Heffernan did attend a wheelchair sports camp -- in Aurora. Now 24, she’s a counselor there. Heffernan was born with something called osteogenesis imperfecta, which cause brittle bones that break easily.
