Visitors can catch a ride on a reindeer, and other creatures dressed for the holidays, at the Kit Carson County Carousel in Burlington Dec. 3.

The historic Kit Carson County Carousel will fire up Sunday, Dec. 3 for a one-day-only celebration featuring free rides and holiday tunes from the Monster Band Organ. It's just one of the state's holiday celebrations that are authentically Colorado, and a bit off the beaten path.

In nearby Lincoln County, folks are stringing up lights, decorating trees, and serving up some small town warmth for the "Christmas on the Plains" tour, which is also on Dec. 3. The town of Hugo has decorated the historic Hedlund House Museum, built by the town's founder.

The Genoa Tower will be adorned with holiday lights for the Christmas on the Plains tour.

Down the road in Genoa, hot chocolate will be served at the iconic Genoa Tower, which was built in the 1930s along US 24.

In Limon, the Limon Heritage Museum is decorating with items from the museum's collection, as well as a few from homes. The museum's Mary Andersen describes Christmas on the Plains this way: "We're more old-fashioned, not in a bad sense. A little more homey, personal."
