Opera Colorado Sings Fiscal Woes

Listen Now

Opera Colorado kicks off its 30th season on Saturday with a production of Romeo and Juliet, by Charles Gounod. But the anniversary is dampened by some serious financial troubles. Greg Carpenter, the Denver-based opera company’s general director, recently announced a deficit of about $700,000. As a result, the world premiere of The Scarlet Letter, with a libretto by Colorado’s poet laureate David Mason, has been postponed until 2015. Meanwhile, Opera Colorado just launched a campaign to raise $1.2 million by March 30th. Carpenter talks to Ryan Warner.
