Radio Dances: 'Promenade Sentimentale' by Stephanie Wolf
"Promenade Sentimentale" is choreographed and performed by CPR dance commentator Stephanie Wolf. Stephanie recorded the piece using home equipment. The music is "Clair de Lune" by Claude Debussy, with Laura Sullivan on piano.
Music is often the catalyst for choreographic inspiration. So, when considering a dance for the airwaves, my approach wasn’t too dissimilar from the approach I would take to choreograph a ballet for the stage.
It all starts with the music.
I felt compelled to use music I’ve been drawn to in the past, and toyed with several compositions and concepts until I settled on an all-time favorite, Debussy’s “Claire de Lune.”
For me, it was easy to visualize movement to this music. The simple, calming tone gave way to several quiet moments, during which the performer’s breath or movements might be heard. I created a loose choreographic structure that left room for interpretation. It’s an uncomplicated solo work about reconnecting with the joy of movement. It’s about taking a breath when things seem chaotic.
