Two Gay Men, Two Different Generations

Listen Now

The passage of civil unions earlier this year, and recent rulings from the US Supreme Court on gay marriage, got us thinking about how much has changed for gay and lesbian people in the span of a single lifetime. Young people who come out of the closet today have had a radically different experience than someone in their 60’s.

Host Ryan Warner invited two openly gay men, from two different generations, to interview each other and learn how their experiences differ.

Evan Blonigen is a 23-year-old law student at the University of Colorado. He grew up in Casper, Wyoming, and the murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998, left a real mark. Blonigen speaks with 66 year old Phillip Hoyle. Hoyle lives in Denver and grew up in rural Kansas. For many years, he was married to a woman. They had two children together. Hoyle is a massage therapist now, but spent more than 30 years doing church work. He has a Master of Divinity from Texas Christian University. Today, he leads a gay seniors group called “Telling Your Story” at The Center in Denver.
