Why Do People Intentionally Hurt Themselves?

Listen Now

Sociologist Patti Adler studies people who intentionally injure themselves. Cutters. Burners. Branders. And after a decade of research, she’s published a new book, “The Tender Cut: Self-Injury in the Cyber Age.” Adler tells Ryan Warner self-injury is catching on among people who didn’t used to do it. Before we talk with her, let’s meet 51-year-old Samantha-Anne Wagoner, of Colorado Springs. For most of her life, she cut herself. Be aware that our conversation contains some graphic descriptions. Wagoner says she didn’t start by cutting, but with hitting herself. (Originally aired Oct. 14, 2011)
