Last September, the Four Mile Canyon Fire west of Boulder destroyed 169 homes, including a home in Sunshine Canyon owned by former Sports Illustrated writer Doug Looney and his wife, Mary Ann. Since the fire, Looney has felt many emotions including fear, loss, awe, and gratitude. In the end, the couple decided not to rebuild in the canyon. They now live in Niwot.

Looney shared his story recently at an event called  "Words to Stir the Soul," which was sponsored by the Center for the American West at CU-Boulder. Click below to hear other highlights from the event that we've aired on Colorado Matters:
