Most of the money CDOT uses comes from the gas tax, which doesn’t generate revenue like it used to. So the department is exploring creative new ways to tap into drivers’ pockets.

Along with the bikeway and highway lanes, the $317 million project also features new technology to help motorists better decide how to get around.
"You can stay in the general purpose lanes and pay with your time, or you can jump into the toll – into the express lanes," explained CDOT's executive director.
