CPR Classical is gearing up to broadcast Opera Colorado's recent production of "As One." It's a unique chamber opera that's been performed in 10 cities since its debut in 2014.

CPR Classical will air Opera Colorado’s production twice:

  • Saturday, April 29 at 1:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, May 3 at 7 p.m.

The 75-minute opera tells the story of a transgender protagonist named Hannah as she grapples with her identity.

Two singers, a baritone and a mezzo-soprano, play Hannah. They're the only singers onstage. The music is similarly stripped down, with just a string quartet and conductor instead of a full pit orchestra.

Opera Colorado's cast recently gave us a preview of "To Know" -- a key moment in the opera in which Hannah heads to the public library to research the word "trangsgender" -- in the CPR Performance Studio. Watch it in the video link above.

Librettist Mark Campbell, who created the opera with composer Laura Kaminsky and filmmaker/co-librettist Kimberly Reed, recently talked with Colorado Matters about the project's development. Campbell penned the libretto for several well-received operas and mentors composers at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
