Fruitless: Unconventional Still Life

Event Description

Cottonwood Center for the Arts is proud to present a juried exhibition for the month of April composed of artists from across the Pikes Peak region and beyond.

Throughout art history the still life was an artist's opportunity to show off. The dew collecting on a flower petal, a tinge of mold on a grape...these minutia glorified the long sitting time artists needed to fully investigate their subjects. Then came big shake-ups: Cezanne's Apples, O'Keefe's skulls, Thiebaud's desserts. Can we push the envelope?

In essence, a still life continues to be defined as 'an arrangement of objects'. We asked artists to present an unexpected and thoughtfully alternate approach to this familiar subject. Prompts included junk drawer, spill your purse/pockets, celebrate your altar, and nontraditional materials.

We invite you to come experience “Fruitless” and enjoy two floors of open studios + galleries this First Friday from 5-8pm, and all month during normal business hours.
