School testing is back in the news today, this time in Pueblo. Public school teachers there wore black in class to protest new state standardized tests.
"It’s not that we’re objecting to assessments. It’s the amount of time that it’s taking right now. We’re losing almost a third of a school year to assessments," said Suzanne Etheredge, president of the Pueblo Education Association, representing teachers in the city of Pueblo.
The Pueblo Education Association told KATC-TV they're calling it "a day of mourning for the loss of teaching and learning," and they want state lawmakers to pay attention.
As Jenny Brundin reported yesterday, 10 Colorado school districts hoping to skip new state English and math tests were just rebuffed by the Colorado Attorney General. Cynthia Coffman issued a statement Tuesday that the State Board of Education does not have the legal authority to grant waivers.
