Classroom Diversity Bill Clears House Panel

A bill that would require more diversity to be taught in classrooms cleared a House committee on Monday.

Democratic Rep. Joe Salazar’s bill would require that public school students be taught the history, culture and contributions that various ethnic groups have made in Colorado – including American Indians, Hispanics and African Americans.

No witnesses testified against the bill and the legislation received bipartisan support. However, most Republicans voted against the bill – arguing the legislation would grow government and take away local control from school districts.

The bill now heads to another committee for further consideration.
