Mitch Morrissey, Denver’s district attorney, is disputing a key allegation made by community groups trying to force a recall election to remove him from office. They say he hasn’t prosecuted any law enforcement officers in his 11 years in the position.
The accusations followed Morrissey's decision not to file criminal charges against the Denver officers who shot and killed Jessica Hernandez earlier this year. Morrissey says he has filed criminal charges in about two dozen cases that involved coercion or the use or threatened use of unjustified force.
The recall petition also claims Morrissey has yet to file an indictment in an officer-involved shooting -- a point Morrissey’s statement did not directly address. The groups need almost 54,000 signatures to force a recall election.
