Durango Tosses Free Glass Recycling Program

Recycling in Durango is getting a bit harder as the city is canning its free glass recycling collection and raising rates for its other recycling.

The Durango Herald reports that the city will remove the bins for collecting glass Dec. 18. About 21 loads of glass collected at the two free drop-off centers were so contaminated this year that they had to be taken to the landfill.

Any glass residents want to be recycled must be taken to the Durango Recycle Center.

Glass is not part of the city's residential pickup program because it can damage other recyclables.

The city is also increasing fees for its trash program next year, with fees increasing 5 percent to $3.24 for a 60-gallon recycling container and $14.05 for a 60-gallon trash container
