Denver has seen a dozen gang-related deaths so far this year. Police have stepped up patrols and added surveillance cameras, and Denver is not alone -- other parts of the state also face gang activity.

What causes surges in violence like the one in Denver? And can gang members leave gangs? Lisa Taylor-Austin, a Connecticut psychotherapist who got her start working with tough gang members in Los Angles, tackled those questions with Colorado Matters' Andrea Dukakis.
