Despite big spending by the oil and gas industry, voters in three Front Range communities approved moratoriums on hydraulic fracturing in yesterday’s election.

Voters in Fort Collins approved a five-year moratorium. Voters in Boulder extended a moratorium that’s already in place on new oil and gas exploration; the current moratorium took effect in June of this year. It will be extended for an additional five years. And voters in Lafayette passed an ban on all new drilling.

But, Broomfield’s vote on a five-year moratorium is too close to call. By the last count available early this morning, the spread is 13 votes out of more than 20,000 votes cast.
