Colorado Amendment V, Lowering Age Requirement For State Legislature, Has Failed

Amendment V was defeated by voters. It calls for lowering the age requirement to serve in the Colorado Assembly—the state legislature—from 25 to 21. The measure was statutory, meaning it needed a simple majority to pass.

Proponents said prohibiting people younger than 25 from serving is an unnecessary restriction. Allowing younger candidates to run for office encourages civic engagement, they said. Opponents said younger candidates may not have the maturity and expertise to be effective legislators.
