Colorado Firm Plans New Future for Petra

Listen Now

There’s a scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where Harrison Ford ends up in a stunning archaeological site in Jordan. While the movie’s plot wasn’t real, the site is. It’s called Petra, and the skinny canyon Ford squeezed himself through sees nearly a million tourists a year. That’s causing a lot of wear and tear— so much so that Petra is in danger of losing its listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Now, landscape architects at Aspen-based Design Workshop have helped draft a plan to take care of the site and even improve life for locals. The plan recently won them an award from the American Planning Association. Ryan Warner talks with project lead Kurt Culbertson.
