Denver’s Police Crime Report Errors: What’s Going On?

The Denver Post and CBS 4 both reported recently that a thousand crime reports from the Denver Police Department were found to have errors: Certain crimes were reclassified, including downgrading assaults and other violent crimes. An internal investigation has been launched.

James Ponzi, chair of Criminology at Regis University in Denver, was with DPD for 35 years. He tells Colorado Matters that accurate crime reports help police understand the safety of neighborhoods and the nature of calls they respond to. Accurate reports also build community trust.
