How Educators And LGBT Advocates Are Responding To 9-Year-Old’s Suicide

How the LGBT Rights Movement Began

The suicide of a 9-year-old boy who was bullied in school because of his sexuality has raised questions about how seriously school take harassment. Fourth-grader Jamel Myles, who had recently come out as gay, is just one of many LGBTQ kids who are bullied, miss classes and consider or commit suicide.

CPR education reporter Jenny Brundin talked to Colorado Matters about the strategies both educators and LGBTQ community advocates are taking. Daniel Ramos, who heads One Colorado, said an inclusive culture throughout the school is critical. Brundin recently attended a conference, the LGBTQ-Inclusive Educational Practices Institute, that aimed to teach educators just that kind of inclusive curriculum.
