Several political candidates in Colorado are taking bold positions on immigration. This is after Arizona passed the strictest immigration law in the country. Arizona's law makes it a crime to not carry immigration papers, and it requires police to detain people whom they suspect are undocumented immigrants. Colorado politicians are taking sides on whether this state should do something similar.
How will these bold statements help or harm candidates, come election day? Colorado, after all is home to several hundred thousand eligible Hispanic voters.
We turn to the Pew Hispanic Center, a non-partisan organization that studies Latinos and their impact on the country. According to the center's lead researcher on voting trends, Mark Hugo Lopez, Hispanic voter turnout is not nearly as strong as white voter turnout, in Colorado, or across the country. But, he tells us that Hispanic voter turn out is on the rise.
