A last-ditch attempt to continue a successful contraceptive program for teens and low-income women failed in the Colorado legislature today.
House Democrats had amended the state budget to include $5 million for the program, which supplies free long-lasting contraceptives, including IUDs, to health clinics.
But the conference committee charged with reconciling House and Senate changes deadlocked on the amendment, effectively killing it. The vote was party line, with Democrats in favor and Republicans opposed.
There is a separate bill in the legislature to continue the contraception program, but that measure is very unlikely to make it through the Republican-controlled state Senate.
