Texas Couple Needed Rescue After Marriage Proposal At Jasper Peak

A romantic marriage proposal turned into a rescue effort early Sunday morning in Boulder County.

Midday Saturday, Joshua Mason, 27, and his girlfriend, Katie Davis, 28, from Denton, Texas, went on a hike from the 4th of July Trailhead to Jasper Peak on the Continental Divide. On the 8.2 mile hike, with an elevation gain of over 3,000 feet, Mason found an isolated place to pop the question. The Boulder County Sheriff’s office said Davis happily accepted the surprise proposal.

The newly engaged couple were carrying little water and were not prepared for cold weather or to camp overnight. When it got dark, they got lost.

A hiker found them showing signs of dehydration and altitude sickness and led them to a friend's camping site at nearby Diamond Lake.

A camper hiked down to the trailhead and drove to Nederland to call 911. A rescue crew was dispatched around 2 a.m. The couple was safely returned to their rental car around 6 a.m.

Boulder County Sheriff’s office said they were in need of no further medical attention at that time.

According to deputies, the engagement is still on.
