The number of armed militias in the United States spiked after the election of the first black president in 2008. These heavily armed civilians are loosely linked by a disdain for the federal government.
Mother Jones Senior Editor Shane Bauer wanted to learn more about the country's paramilitary movement. So he went undercover to the US-Mexico border where he met quite a few Coloradans. Their militia? The Three Percent United Patriots.
