Gov. John Hickenlooper delivering the annual State of the State Address, Jan. 14, 2016.

The 2019 State of the State is Jan. 10, 2019 at 11 a.m. This will be the first major policy speech at the state capitol for newly installed Gov. Jared Polis.

The annual update helps kick off the start of the legislative session before lawmakers really start diving into their work.

For the first time in four years, Democrats hold a majority in both chambers and the governor’s office. Polis is expected to reveal more details on his legislative agenda and priorities as the state’s top executive. For many lawmakers and lobbyists, Polis is still largely an unknown entity.

The wealthy entrepreneur from Boulder spent 10 years serving in Congress and replaces the term-limited John Hickenlooper. Polis left a safe House seat to run on a platform of moving Colorado to 100 percent renewable energy by the year 2040 and enacting free full-day kindergarten throughout the state. Polis said he would sign executive orders on some of his campaign priorities soon.

Polis has made history as the country’s first openly gay man to be elected governor — and the state’s first Jewish governor.

Seating for members of the public is on a first come first serve basis in the galleries of the state House of Representatives.
