I still remember the first music video I ever saw. Sheryl Crow was singing “If It Makes You Happy” from inside a museum habitat on MTV while I ate my breakfast. I specifically recall thinking, “What the hell am I watching?!”
I still miss how easily accessible music videos were for cable viewers back in the 90s and early 2000s, but it’s impressive to see how the music video has gone on and even thrived without major televised support. In 2013, we saw a banquet of NSFW visuals for some of our favorite (and least favorite) songs, ranging from mainstreamer Alan Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”, to the indie UK rockers Is Tropical’s “Lover’s Cave”. The FCC wouldn't have stood for it back in the day, but the internet has given us many gifts, including no rules music videos. In my humble opinion, these are the best music videos of 2013:
Beach House – “Wishes”
Favorite part: 2:35, the woman laughing insanely in the background. With all the insanity in this video, she somehow stood out and made me laugh out loud.
Rhye –“Open”
Favorite part: 1:37, the entire thing is beautiful but I love this part because when he’s falling backward, the main character looks EXACTLY like OpenAir’s own, Corey Jones.
Disclosure – “When a Fire Starts to Burn”
Favorite Part: 4:21, for obvious reasons.
David Bowie – “The Next Day”
Favorite Part: Gary Oldman is the best part of most things, but in this case it’s at 2:44 because I’m a sucker for a good tableau.
The Coup – “Magic Clap”
Favorite part: 1:52, Patton Oswalt’s pantomime is on point here.
