Sarah Assbring -- the Swedish musician behind El Perro Del Mar -- has a reputation as a musical chameleon. On her four previous studio albums, she's navigated modest indie rock, otherworldly disco and polished baroque pop.
For her latest album, "KoKoro," Assbring submersed herself in the pop music of Japan, China and Cambodia. The effect is immediately obvious on the single "Breadandbutter:" She employs a guzheng -- or Chinese zither -- for the song's central riff, backed by Eastern Asian wind instruments and rhythms.
