Willie O. Steam, the first African American police officer to die in the line of duty, was murdered shortly after breaking up an illegal dance party in 1921 — at the height of prohibition. The owner of the club and an accomplice attacked and shot Steam twice, killing him. This Denver Post clipping shows the fate of his attacker.
