More than 53.4 million passengers passed through Denver International Airport in 2014, making it DIA's busiest year on record.

The previous high mark in numbers was in 2012, airport spokesman Heath Montgomery said in a statement today. DIA also set six monthly records for passenger traffic in January, February, April, May, September and October, and for international passenger traffic in 2014, with a total of 2,208,209 international passengers.

"Ending the year with record-breaking passenger traffic demonstrates the continued strength of the Denver market for air travel," airport CEO Kim Day said in a statement. "DIA has the third-largest domestic network for flights, and has seen sustained growth in international passenger traffi."

The airport also marked an 11.2 percent increase in cargo traffic last year compared to the year before.
