On Sept. 22, 1963, religious leaders dedicated the Cadet Chapel at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, with those soaring aluminum spires that can be seen from miles away. The building has become an architectural icon, and it’s one of Colorado’s top tourist attractions. But it almost wasn’t built. Ryan Warner visits the chapel and talks to Duane Boyle, the academy's resident architect and preservationist.
