Oral arguments start Tuesday before the U.S. Supreme Court in Masterpiece Cake Shop vs. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The case began in 2012 when Christian cake maker Jack Phillips in Lakewood refused on religious grounds to make a custom cake for the same-sex wedding of Charlie Craig and David Mullins. The high court is now being asked to balance discrimination law, civil rights, and the First Amendment.
The Newseum in Washington D.C. organized a mock hearing in which the attorneys Ria Marr of the ACLU and David Cortman of The Alliance Defending Freedom are questioned by journalists who cover the Supreme Court: Adam Liptak, of The New York Times. Mark Sherman of The Associated Press, Richard Wolf of USA Today and Alex Swoyer, of The Washington Times.
