Colorado’s Hunger Problem

Listen Now

Leslie Nichols teaches 4th and 5th grade in the small town of Collbran, Colorado, on the Western Slope. She noticed a student of hers, Rosie, seemed distracted and was falling behind. It turns out, Rosie often came to class hungry. She’d zone out and imagine people as food. "I look at the teacher and all I think about is food... sometimes, I envision her as a banana. And everybody in the class is like apples or oranges...” That’s from the new documentary “A Place at the Table,” about the growing problem of hunger in the United States. It focuses on working families in Collbran who struggle to put food on the table. The film opens March 1st. Ryan Warner speaks with one of the directors, Kristi Jacobson and, from Collbran, teacher Leslie Nichols.
