The Spring Fire is burning east of Fort Garland in Costilla County, Colo., July 2, 2018.

The Spring Creek Fire, now the second largest wildfire in state history, has claimed more than 100 homes. Tamara Estes and her family own eight homes near La Veta, and at least five of them were destroyed.

The Estes family has been in Huerfano County since the 1870s. Tamara’s grandparents homesteaded in La Veta in 1915, and her mother grew up there and went to La Veta High School. Her parents built a cabin in 1963 using stones and trees from the surrounding land.
