The album also addresses the changing cultural landscapes of American cities like Portland and Denver. They recorded the album at the studio of Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock, who plays guitar on the song "So Hazy."
Ages And Ages performed five songs from "Something To Ruin" at OpenAir and spoke with Alisha Sweeney about their Central and South American trips, the negative consequences of the TV show "Portlandia" and working at Brock's studio.

Singer Tim Perry on how Portland has changed in recent years:
"The quality of Portland was so, I hate to say it, but so D.I.Y. ... The culture was so founded in, seeping in, normal people getting out there and making things happen.
"Eventually, it sort of gained a reputation. And then that reputation, maybe, outgrew the city itself."
Perry on choosing to work with Brock:
"I originally am from Seattle. My very first time I went to a bar legally was at Moe's, before it was Neumos, to see Modest Mouse.
"But aside from that, he lives in Portland and is part of the Portland community and has a rad studio."
