Formed in 2004, The Ruby Suns is the main musical project of New Zealand-based artist Ryan McPhun. Their 2008 album Sea Lion drew attention for its catchy, upbeat melodies and folksy charm. Fight Softly, released in 2010, found the group stepping away from their traditional folk sound and moving into more danceable electronic territory. Their latest album Christopher, released earlier this year on Sub Pop records, is the next logical step for the group, characterized by the sleek electronic soundscapes of prolific producer Chris Coady.

In February, the group stopped by the OpenAir studios to perform several songs off their new album and talked with our own Scott Carney afterwards. Listen to the full interview below and hear about McPhun's formative experiences in Norway, his upcoming projects, and what's next for the band.
